Virtual Camp for 13 Year Old

My son really enjoyed his Virtual Camp, learning 3D game design using Unreal Engine. The tutor was really patient, helpful and supportive. I was really impressed with the quality of the games he produce by the end of the course. He is now teaching his younger brother to use the software!

Happy teenager

My 15 year old son initially did not want to attend this summer camp. He reluctantly agreed to try the first day, and was adamant that he would stay home for the rest of the week. But he ended up completing the whole 5 days, and is now considering switching his PC from Windows to Linux :-)

My daughter completed the Python coding course. She had done a similar course with a different provider and I was able to make a direct comparison between the two. This course was much more organised, with the instructors monitoring the pupils' screens to make sure they stayed on track. It was very well structured and there was no 'time filling.' It also held her interest (after the introductory parts which I think she found a bit dull) for very long days.
All in all I think this deserves a 5* review. A very impressively run virtual club.

My daughter enjoyed the holiday camp immensely. Although she had not coded in Python before, she was carefully guided through the concepts and was able to apply what she had learnt and seemed very satisfied with her achievements. She was able to get on with the virtual course independently over the 2 weeks and looked forward to her classes each morning. Her teacher was fun and friendly and she thought he was fantastic. I can always rest assured my children will not be disappointed with a FunTech course.

This is the second time our 10 year old son attends a virtual course ( it was the minecraft redstone one) and we are already planning the next one!
We are quite pleased with the ease of booking and of communicating ( although I would note that it took a few days to get a response to some technical questions...) and we were kept informed throughout the course about any issues, every time our son would be logged out or if there were any problems at all, very well supervised. Very polite and helpful staff on the other end of the phone if needed.
Our son found the course extremely enjoyable and is very very keen indeed to attend again.

We live in Canada, so despite summer holidays my kid had to get up at 6:30 AM every day to take part, but he loved it so much he even said he had no problems getting up! The course requires a bit of pre-installation to get going but the instructions were pretty clear and we were able to get going on time. Unfortunately the first half day was spent it seems with trying to get everyone else up to the same level. Once the course got going Jacob found it very simple and I often found him playing on his phone whilst waiting for others to catch up. The course did get more challenging for him but he always seemed to be sat around, waiting for others to catch up. This was the main disappointment for me, he is obviously more capable of going faster and have more challenging work set, but the course has to get everyone along at the same pace. Such a shame - he has the same issue at school, so not just a Funtech thing. But I feel that adding in extension exercises or bringing in concepts like test driven development, documentation generation, things like that would keep the more able engaged and off their phones.

I myself am in IT and thought the curriculum was a little light, and the stuff that they were coding, whilst teaching the basics, didn't seem to be engaging or exciting. Python has some great gaming libraries and graphics capabilities so it would have been good to see something at the end of the week where the students plot a graph or draw a pie chart or navigate a skier down a slope or similar.

But, at the end of the day, when asked, Jacob said he enjoyed the course and learned something new. And that's what it is all about. So no complaints - take the above as suggestions.

My child enjoyed the programme very much. What impressed me was when my child was late in attending one morning, one of the staff quickly called to check/remind.

I could see that he was engaging really well and focusing on the task at hand. The pace of the course was good and Omar made sure that he had plenty of time to devote to each student.

We had a couple of software issues during the week and these were dealt with very efficiently by Liam.

It would be good if you could send an email to parents at the end of the course with list of the useful links that were put in the chat area during the week. As you can imagine the kids do not bookmark these links and they would be very useful for parents to have.

We weren't convinced our daughter, aged 7, would stay engaged in the sessions but she wanted to do the course after watching her sister doing the course. She doesn't have a long attention span. During (school) home learning we noticed her getting bored and trying to avoid going to her online sessions. She loved her (FunTech) sessions, staying really focused we could hear her answering lots of the questions and creating some really cool mods.

She is really proud of her creations and has sent photos to her friends.

Her tutor was really helpful when the students had problems, answering questions and finding solutions. She's had a brilliant camp - thank you!

My 11 year old son loved this and was very excited about his design. The tutor, Connor, was very friendly and informative. He also was great at helping us set up the Virtual Window at the start of the first session. Overall highly recommended!
