Is Roblox Suitable for My 12-Year-Old & What Can They Learn?

Roblox is an incredibly popular global gaming platform, primarily aimed at kids and young teenagers. Whilst Roblox has been designed with the safety of children very much in mind, just how safe is it and is it suitable for a 12-year-old to play?

Is Roblox suitable for 12-year olds?

How old do you have to be to play Roblox? Roblox comes with a PEGI age rating of 7+. That means it has been passed as being able to be played by ages 7 years and up. If your 12-year-old child is asking you permission or help in setting up a Roblox account, we recommend you set up parental controls and monitor your child’s activity.

You can find out how to set this up on the Roblox website. Providing that the Roblox account has been setup with your child’s correct date of birth, games that are more suitable for 13 plus ages will be filtered out.

Did You Know? FunTech run Roblox Game Maker courses each summer for kids aged 9 to 12. You can find out more in our courses section.

The games platform has been designed primarily for children, meaning they are the primary audience and market.

This means that the game has been built around the safety and protection of minors online, giving it more security and restrictions than other games aimed at more adult audiences.

What Roblox teaches 12-year olds

We believe that the Roblox game platform itself teaches 12-year olds a wide range of disciplines and skills including:

  • Encourages creativity.
  • Encourages leadership and team play.
  • Teaches coding and programming skills.
  • Helps with mathematics.
  • Encourages logical thinking.

We’ve written another blog post which goes into a lot more detail on what Roblox teaches kids.

The bottom line is, Roblox is a fantastic way for 12-year olds to get introduced to video game design and coding. Both of these disciplines can present fantastic future career opportunities as we’ve highlighted elsewhere in the FunTech blog:

The creativity of Roblox

Being an open-world, sandbox platform there is no end goal or objective aside from have fun; it is down to the individual players what they want to do with their time in the different games.

This can vary from interacting with other players, playing on pre-made maps and worlds created by Roblox and other players online, or creating their very own worlds from scratch.

Roblox has a thriving online community, with hundreds of different games and worlds being created and shared everyday by people all over the globe. This allows people to play around with other people’s creations and play games that they have created within the platform.

However, 12-year-old kids can also create their own world completely from the ground up, whether it is a small homestead for you and your friends to live in, or a grand recreation of a famous landmark or something entirely new from your imagination.

Video game design and coding with Roblox

Roblox allows 12-year olds to code and create their own video games and offers a great introduction to programming.

Coding combines left brain and right brain thinking, engaging kid’s brain both creatively and logically. Once kids understand basic coding, computers and other machinery suddenly become a lot easier to understand.

For instance, it could lead on to them building their own websites, or even creating a popular video game in Roblox played by millions of kids the world over.

Our Roblox summer camps

If your child has expressed an interest in Roblox, then you might want to consider checking out our Roblox summer camps. They run 9 until 5 each day during the holidays, are Ofsted registered, and run at locations in London and around the south of England.

To find out more, take a look at our Roblox Game Maker Course.
