Coding for 8 Year Olds: Parents’ Guide to Classes, Apps, & Games

It’s possible for kids aged 8 years old can get into coding and computer programming in a variety of ways. Learning to code has never been easier, with coding classes, games, apps, gifts, and toys all available to help your 8 year old take their programming skills to the next level. But which classes and apps should you choose as being the most age-appropriate? Let us help you…

As the UK’s leading provider or coding lessons for 8 year olds, we’ve been teaching kids now to program since the mid 1990s. In that time, we’ve taught thousands of children how code. Our lessons are loved by kids of all ages due to their fun nature. They are also valued by parents as they can help to set children up for life with tech skills that are going to be extremely valuable in education and future careers.

It is possible to teach coding to 8 year olds, but the format needs to be structured right to keep them engaged and passionate. This is at the core of everything we do, and we would encourage you to browse our website and also check out the coding classes we have designed for 8 year olds below. The lessons listed here are followed by some app and game suggestions too.

Coding classes for 8 year olds

At FunTech we offer both virtual classes and summer camps for kids where that can learn to code in a fun and safe environment. You can read more about what we offer and why so parents choose us here, or simply get started with the class suggestions below.

1. Minecraft with Mods

This creative and fun Minecraft coding class is packed full of learning, experimentation, problem solving and creativity. Once your child has mastered the secrets of Minecraft such as brewing potions and conquering the Nether – they will learn how to Mod a variety of different items that will take their Minecraft skills way beyond the basics.

2. Scratch Coding

Whilst the theory and logic of coding has remained the same for decades, methods have evolved significantly. These coding classes are ideal for younger kids to get to grips with coding. Scratch is a fantastic visual-based coding editor which enables children to create fun animations, interactive stories, games, sounds and much more! It’s the perfect introduction to coding and computational thinking that makes coding for kids seriously fun!

3. Lego Robotics Junior

This Lego Robotics class lets kids build, customise, code and test their very own robot (one per child). The Lego classes start with learning about the different sensors, actuators and then how to code their robot using data gathered from sensors. Throughout the week using Lego Mindstorms software your child will learn to code their bots to perform variety of fun and challenging tasks. At the end of the week, your child will compete in the ‘Grand Finale’ – testing the speed, strength and intelligence of their robot. An amazing spectacle not to be missed!

Coding apps for 8 year olds

There are also some great apps and games available that encourage coding for 8 year olds from the comfort of your own home. The below choices are free to download and offer great value, but there will be some paid elements should you choose to subscribe to them.

1. Kodable

This free download on the iPhone and iPad helps teach 8 year olds the basics of coding procedures with simple to understand lessons. Your child can design games, build characters, learn about object-oriented programming, and start using Javascript.

2. Scratch Junior

This coding app lets children learn new skills as they are taught how to program their own games and interactive stories. It uses an easy to use visual storyboard where kids can snap together programming blocks to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves.

This coding app is a great introduction to coding for your 8 year old before they possibly take the FunTech Scratch coding course.

3. Algorithm City

This is an android based app which uses a simple interface to let your 8 year old start off learning some basic coding concepts. The app introduces command sequencing, functions, and loops taught using sequential levels of difficulty.

Coding toys and gifts for 8 year olds

There are also many coding toys for 8 year olds. Here are two of the best which we rate very highly.

1. Ozobot Bit coding toy robot

The Ozobot Bit robot is an award-winning toy that helps to bring coding to life. Kids can drag and drop bits of code from an app or computer to create and play interactive games. It’s also possible to create challenges and activities – see how it works in the video below.

2. Piper Coding Minecraft Edition

This is a hands-on learning experience which lets 8 year old learn, coding, computer science, and electronics while building and using a fully functioning computer. Assemble the computer’s hardware using the Piper Computer Kit’s engineering blueprint.

There’s also a Minecraft edition available – we also use Minecraft extensively when we teach 8 year olds in our coding classes.
