Smooth Stone is one of those blocks that makes everything look better. Floors feel cleaner. Builds look more modern. And if you love designing houses, bases, or big “mega builds”, Smooth Stone is a go-to.
The good news? It’s super easy to make once you know the steps.
Before we show you how, did you know we run Minecraft online coding classes and summer camps? You can view all options in our camps and courses pages if you want to get ahead in Minecraft.
What is Smooth Stone used for in Minecraft?
Smooth Stone is mainly a building block. It has a neat, polished look that’s great for:
- Modern floors and walls
- Pathways and courtyards
- Foundations that don’t look “too rough”
- Clean interiors (especially with glass and wood)
It also has one practical crafting use: you can make a Blast Furnace with it (handy for speeding up smelting ores).
What you need to make Smooth Stone in Minecraft
To make Smooth Stone, you need:
- A Furnace (or a Blast Furnace, but a normal Furnace works fine)
- Fuel (coal, charcoal, wood, etc.)
- Cobblestone (easy to mine almost anywhere)
Step-by-step: How to make Smooth Stone in Minecraft
Step 1: Smelt Cobblestone into Stone
- Open your Furnace.
- Put Cobblestone in the top slot.
- Add fuel in the bottom slot.
- Wait for it to smelt.
You’ll get Stone.
This step matters because you can’t make Smooth Stone directly from Cobblestone.
Step 2: Smelt Stone into Smooth Stone
Now do it again:
- Put the Stone you just made into the top slot.
- Add fuel again if needed.
- Smelt it.
You’ll get Smooth Stone.
That’s the whole trick: smelt twice.
Quick tips to make it faster
- Smelt a big batch at once. It’s more efficient than doing a few at a time.
- Use multiple furnaces side-by-side if you’re making lots for a big build.
- If you already have Stone from mining (with Silk Touch), you can skip step one.
How to craft a Blast Furnace with Smooth Stone
If you’re getting into efficiency (or just smelting everything), this is a fun upgrade.
To craft a Blast Furnace, you need:
- 5 × Iron Ingots
- 3 × Smooth Stone
- 1 × Furnace
It smelts ores faster than a regular Furnace, which is great once you start mining seriously.
The bigger picture: Minecraft is full of “hidden” learning
Here’s the fun part.
When you learn recipes like Smooth Stone, you’re doing more than crafting. You’re also:
- Following a process in the right order
- Planning ahead (materials + fuel)
- Testing, repeating, improving
- Building confidence through small wins
That’s the same mindset that helps kids learn coding.
And Minecraft is a brilliant place to start.
Want to learn even more with Minecraft?
If you are reading this as a parent and your child loves Minecraft building , crafting, and experimenting, they’ll usually love the next step too: creating their own mods and coding inside Minecraft.
At FunTech, kids can go beyond “how do I craft this?” and start asking:
- “How do I make my own items, blocks, and worlds?”
- “How do I change what happens in the game?”
- “How do I build something no one else has?”
We offer friendly, expert-led options including:
- Online Minecraft coding courses (great from home)
- Holiday tech camps and summer camps where kids learn loads, meet others, and build exciting projects all week
If your child is Minecraft-mad, explore FunTech’s Minecraft courses and camps and help them level up from player to creator.
